Preparedness Series: First Aid

There is a lot of information available on the web for making and using a first aid kit for emergency purposes, I am not trying to duplicate any of those but give my own take on the first aid kit, using only God's medicine, which I refer to as my herbal first aid kit(s).

What Is In An Herbal First Aid Kit

Very Basic First Aid Kit:
First Aid Herbal Powder - stops bleeding while preventing infection and disinfecting wound (not pictured)
Wound Wash - spray and wipe with cotton pad to clean wound
Healing Salve - prevents and heals infection
Burn Spray - just what the name implies, spray at will on burns, I just keep spraying until pain subsides
Redmond clay - cuts, wounds, burns, bites (even snake), diarrhea, any stomach concerns, sores, etc.
lavender essential oil
bandages - all sizes
cotton pads

Every first aid kit should include some bandages and if you have children, lots of bandages. I would have a variety such as; ace bandages, butterfly bandages and different sized adhesive bandages. Sterile gauze pads are great for long term emergency storage but for everyday use, I just use circle cotton pads. Other items to include would be tweezers, finger nail clippers, small pair scissors, herbal sachet, and any other necessary items you feel to include. I add to or subtract from this basic list for a variety of first aid kits I use as follows:

Every Day First Aid Kit:
Everything in the basic kit plus -
Yarrow tincture (although I prefer the fresh plant in season) - stops bleeding, heals broken skin and wounds
Comfrey salve - fractured bones, bruises, wounds
Bone and Muscle salve - muscle and bone pain (not for use on broken skin)
Pain salve - relieves pain and inflammation
Raw Honey - healing wounds, skin fungus and bacteria, rashes, burns, any type of skin condition
Antibiotic Honey - God's antibiotic ointment, which can also be used for an internal antibiotic
Calendula Oil - cuts, wounds, skin issues
Cayenne tincture - heart attack, stroke, shock, hypothermia, trauma, etc.
Melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil - disinfectant, prevent and heal infection, bites, cuts, wounds, etc.
Helichrysum essential oil - staunch bleeding and bring broken skin together

Emergency Storage First Aid Kit:
This kit has everything above plus lots of bandages, plastic gloves, masks, triangle bandages, butterfly bandages, sutures, mini sewing kit, safety pins, hot and cold packs, popsicle sticks to use for splints, iodine, many sizes of sterile wrapped pads, super glue, a first aid booklet showing how to care for serious injuries in an emergency, and my whole arsenal of essential oils. I just purchased a commercial emergency first aid kit and then added a few of my own items to it. This kit doesn't get any use out of it, it just sits on the shelf next to the other emergency kits, just in case. I keep my arsenal of essential oils in the same closet so everything is in the same place in case of a grab and go emergency.

Where Do I Store my Herbal First Aid Kit

As you can see I have several first aid kits because I use them so much with two wild boys and a couple of girls that play like they are boys. I have a mini kit in my purse and each child has their own, I keep any everyday kit in the vehicles, one in the main floor bathroom, one in the upstairs bathroom, one in the scouter's overnight bag and the large emergency one in the main hall closet with my other emergency kits. You can decide how often you use your kit and where the most convenient place to store it (them) would be. I highly recommend everyone have some type of kit in each vehicle and then of course a large one with the emergency supplies.

First Aid Herbs to Have in the Yard

There are a few plants that are so beneficial to have around the yard for first aid purposes, must have plants for me include:

Yarrow
Comfrey
Plantain
Lavender
Lamb's Ear - this plant makes a great emergency bandage as well as nature's toilet paper or feminine pad (hey in an emergency if these items get destroyed or you run out, you'll be grateful for this fuzzy little friend).

Where to Purchase Items For Your Kit

The dollar store is a great place to start when purchasing items such as; bandages, cotton and gauze pads, clippers, tweezers, and super glue. Herbal tinctures can be purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs, as well as any herbs or supplies to make any of my salves, sprays or oils. Redmond Clay can be purchased at your local health food store, on Amazon or from their direct website.

What a good page you have given to others!
I went over my home cabinet. Adding some it the items you listed.

I keep a few EOs and some herbs in my medicine cabinet.
You wrote about emergency kit - natural.
But, the same applies to the home medicine cabinet.

I recommend all mothers have the old fashioned hot water bottle in the cabinet. It can be used for warm or cold applications.

Also, have a small child’s enema bulb syringe and the red rubber enema bag one in the cabinet.

Used those many times for my kids and visiting mom’s kids.

Saved a late night trip to the ER.

There are so many items to put in a kit.
I put all the items you listed in my cabinet. In containers. Wrote expiration dates on each container.

Now working on my “emergency “ grab and go kit. Which will have only immediate essentials in it.

I think for the home cabinet/box kit in the home the following may be useful:
-soap bar . Bronners ( spelling?) small bottle of liquid or soap bar. At least a bar of good olde ivory soap.
The soap is good for hand washing, cut cleaning, and more.
Can even be used to make a mild soapy enema for the constipated child. (Have the bulb syringe in the cabinet and lube)
- something to cut with. Like small knife or pocket multiple tool knife
- water in every kit/cabinet! Always have bottle (s) of water!
- a towel (Small one). Wipe faces, cuts, make bandages, wraps for cold and hot, head cover, emergency diaper for baby, and more. Use to lay baby/toddler on for temp taking and enemas.
-thermometer! Have both types! Oral and rectal. While the new digital ones are great — what happens when batter dies? I have a old fashioned shake down rectal thermometer! Always works!

Whoops.

Sorry, I over looked that you had scissors listed.
And wound wash too.

I still have bottle, or bar, Bronners soap in my cabinet. Along with Castile soap bottle.
It is great for so many things. Cleansing cuts , of course diluted with water. Washing hands. Even clothes if needed. Giving baths to the child.

I forgot to mention above a small bottle of Castile soap also is good for many things. Even using Castile soap to prepare a small bowl of mild warm soapy water for giving the toddler an enema with the bulb syringe.
That is when you don’t have any catnip tea or chamomile tea in the house to use.

Which the enema bulb can also, when cleaned of course, be used for cleaning ears with warm water. I forgot which herb can be used for ear cleansing.
Also used for the baby’s nose. As a suction device.

Sorry to talk so much.

Agree with what Annie told…best to be prepared now.
Should something like COVID strike again, and the government messes things up worse, be ready for cut off from healthcare. Health food stores, drug stores and more.

We are not only stocking up on items now, we are learning, sharing and practicing home remedies.

Can’t recall if there was a rush for natural home remedy items during COVID. Know many stores were not opened, or they wouldn’t allow them to open. Which should have been a wake up call for everyone.

Annie’s book, Self Reliance In Health Course book, is one to have in the home. Print it off.

Also try to get copy of Back To Eden book.
And, ABC HERBAL book
And Prescription For Nutritional Healing book.

Annie suggested ABC Herbal book. And we got copies of it.

If the hundreds of positive comments about this book, only seen one negative comments about book ABC Herbal.
Was written by a mom of two kids who seemed not to believe in faith - praying in healing. And she didn’t agree with giving the enema.

We strongly believe in both!! Praying is always a healer and the enema has always helped in our homes!

Since reading, sharing and learning on here, and from others, we got the enema bulb and bag. Never thought would need them. Thought would gather dust in the closet.
Wrong we were. They did save a late night trip to the ER!

Our feeling was use herbal remedies and give one and see. If didn’t work or help then consider trip to doctor or ER.
Mai far been no late night ER visits.
