While Earthpaste is mixed to perfection and very convenient in a push tube, it is costly at $8.00 a tube (yet still worth every penny in my opinion). So I decided to try my hand at mixing my own at a fraction of the cost. We had a fun time mixing up different flavors while also sticking with the flavors Earthpaste comes in.
Redmond clay pulls bacteria and germs from the mouth like a magnet while putting in calcium and other minerals (also known as remineralizing).
Real salt acts as a steralizer, healer of mouth sores and gums as well as giving the paste it's scrubbing action to remove plaque and other build up on teeth.
Xylitol serves dual purposes as a sweetener and is also known for prevention of tooth decay and remineralizing.
Tea tree essential oil is antibacterial and fights infection, cleansing the mouth of bacteria in addition to the clay.
Essential oils add flavoring and each one has its own powerhouse of bacteria and infection fighting properties.
The Recipe
1/4 cup Xylitol (powdered in a coffee grinder)
1 teaspoon Real salt
3 cups distilled water
10 drops tea tree essential oil
other essential oils for flavoring
Stir the clay, Xylitol and salt in a glass mixing bowl. Add the water and stir with a wooden spoon until the clay mixture is incorporated well. It may seem really runny at first but will continue to thicken to a ketcup consistency. Add the tea tree oil and stir well. Because I wanted several flavors I filled glass spice jars and added 10 drops of essential oil per jar. You can make a big batch in a quart jar or whatever you have on hand, just make sure to use glass. Add essential oils to taste. I made several different flavors; peppermint, wintergreen, cinnamon, lemon, orange, lemon/lime (which tastes like skittles) and a Four Thieves blend of cinnamon, lemon, clove and rosemary.
Where do I get the ingredients
*I am not affiliated with Redmond, I just really love their products.
