I continue to be amazed at the powerful healing that can come from God's medicine through the plants he has created for our use. I have had the opportunity (as I am learning to refer to our afflictions) these past couple of months to come up with some remedies for dental pain and discomfort.
First I must share an amazing experience I had with my son. As I've mentioned before I have some pretty crazy boys and this particular child was doing flips off Grandma's couch and landed right on his front tooth and knocked half of it off. This was a year and half ago and our wonderful dentist was able to save the nerve and cap the break. A couple of months ago he started having shooting pain in that tooth and our dentist said that sadly the nerve was dying and there was nothing to be done but a root canal. After the visit my son and I prayed about what to do and we both felt that he was not to have a root canal but the Lord would provide a way to heal the nerve. The dentist said there was nothing that can regenerate nerves but the Lord knows his creations and he truly has provided us with everything we will ever need for care and survival through those creations, so he revealed to me what to use...Yarrow.
Prayer is a pretty powerful thing, there is no recorded evidence in any of my herb books about yarrow regenerating nerves, but I have faith in the Lord. So I gave my son some of my Heal All Herbal Blend three times a day for a week to regenerate that nerve and then used the Gum and Mouth Powder (below) to help with the pain. We made a small poultice and packed it along his gum and he found immediate relief. This we only had to use for two days before he was pain free and we continued with the Heal All Blend for the rest of the week. Yes, after only a week he was pain free, which to us meant that the nerve had indeed been healed. Fast forward a couple of months and we were back in the dentist office for cleanings. I was curious about that nerve and sure enough, it had regenerated and was a healthy thriving nerve once again!

Gum and Mouth Powder
Use this powder for pain in the mouth. Can be mixed with a little water to form a paste then roll in gauze or pack directly over gum or tooth causing the pain.

Tooth Powder
This tooth powder is a modified version of Dr. Christopher's Herbal Tooth and Gum Powder. It an be used to brush your teeth in place of tooth paste (get brush wet and sprinkle powder over the brush or dip into container), to strengthen gums, tighten loose teeth, prevent cavity formation and rebuild enamel.
3 parts oak bark
6 parts comfrey
3 parts horsetail
3 parts peppermint
2 parts slippery elm
1 part lobelia

Mouthwash
Another way to have a healthy mouth is to keep it free from harmful bacteria but keep the healthy flora in. Conventional mouthwashes will kill everything and actually cause more damage in the long run. This is my simple solution for a good mouthwash, which you should use after brushing and flossing.
1 pint jar full of purified or distilled water
7 drops of Thieves essential oil blend (or disinfectant essential oil blend of your choice)
Shake it up to mix it well and there you have it!
