Lemon balm is wonderful for aiding the body in clearing up cold sores (herpes simplex virus) which are miserable and embarassing to have in the first place. At the first sign of that tingling feeling around the lips and mouth, start applying this lip balm. You can also use this as a great lip moisturizer and I enjoy using it as a daily "chapstick".
The Recipe
1 Tbsp. cocoa butter (or 4 wafers)
2 Tbsp. lemon balm infused coconut oil 1 Tbsp. beeswax 7 drops Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) essential oil 10 drops lemon essential oil 3 drops eucalyptus essential oil 6 drops melissa essential oil (optional since it is so expensive)
First make a lemon balm oil infusion by gathering some fresh lemon balm. Let it dry wilt for a few hours by placing on a screen and letting some of the moisture release from the herb. Then chop finely and place in a jar, cover with coconut oil and place in the sun for about two weeks, shaking daily. If you want to do a fast infusion that only takes 1-3 days, follow the instructions here.
Melt the lemon balm oil, beeswax and cocoa butter over very low heat. Remove and add the essential oils, stir well and pour into lip balm tubes or containers and let them sit until hardened. Cap and label and you are ready to apply.
You can purchase all the supplies needed for this project from Mountain Rose Herbs. They carry only the highest quality ingredients. For essential oils I highly encourage you to do your research and make sure you are using 100% geniune essential oil, first distillations are the most potent and powerful, giving you a better product.
